Horseshoe Bend....Attempt #2

So attempt #2 we thought would be a success. In the end my Aunt Jeri and I wondered why we just didn't go to the coast instead. For one the 100 degree weather wasn't so great. But here's the story!

Horseshoe Bend, North Umpqua River, was much better! NO MISQUITOS! Well, except for the typical ones that come out in the evening when you are camping. Just a few though. It was sooo hot though. Much hotter than when we were at Waldo Lake. Thankfully there was a river....rushing river...but still a river! My aunti and uncle and cousins were supposed to meet us around 1 or 2 but they never showed. Well once again we didn't have cell reception so my parents jumped in the car to drive down the mountain a ways but guess what....there was a wild fire (which I had started to see the smoke while they were gone) and the road was closed probably for the next 24 hours. So we didn't have hopes of meeting up with the relatives after all. Bummer! However, about 7 that evening in stroll my aunt, uncle, and cousins. They weren't about to turn around and go back home, especially since they couldn't get ahold of us, and especially since it was 107 degrees at their house, and especially since they had already packed up their stuff. So they grabbed a Forest Service map from the ranger station in Glide and drove the back goat trail all the way to the campground. Instead of 30 min from Glide the detour took 1.5 hours. But we were excited to see them! And my boys were really happy to see their second cousins once removed too! My aunt was babysitting my cousins kids because Wendy just had her 4th c-section, and a baby girl named Annie Paige.

For some reason, once again, my camera was not taking clear pics.

Molly is blurry, but still cute nonetheless!

My Grammy! She was such a trooper through the whole ordeal! It will suprise me if she decides to ever go camping again!

It was tough keeping Tanner away from the fire!

At least we were well protected in our homeland!....lol!

This is Cousin Dallyn. He's Wendy's oldest and is turning 8 this year. I got pics of him and one of his brother standing in front of our "kiddie pool". This was so fun to build. My aunt and I with the help of the kids and family built this. The North Umpqua is a raging river with swift rapids....so we had to keep the kids contained and safe. It actually got to 2 1/2 feet deep toward the middle once we got the big rocks out and there were definately some big ones. It took the muscles of both Austin and Derek to pry some from the sandy floor. Even though we didn't get to play as long as we wanted to in this swim hole, we are hoping it will be there still for the next family that comes along with little ones. My aunt said they may drive back later when my uncle goes to fish to see if it's still standing.

Parker...Wendy's second...5 years old.

Remember that fire I told you about...the second day we were in camp waiting for the roads to reopen (which I ended up having to call Matt from a pay phone at the bodink store to see if he could call my work cuz I was supposed to work but since we couldn't leave to go back home, couldn't exactly make it back to work)...anyway, the second day all the sudden the wind shifted and the smoke started pouring in. My mom has asthma which wasn't good for her but luckily she brought her inhaler. By the evening it cleared out good however. The next day however, the road was still closed, and the fire was no longer contained, and was actually spreading with the chance of shifting and coming towards our camp....so we decided to risk it and drive the scary goat trail back home....narrow dirt road with cliffs on each side and a couple thousand feet down....with screaming kids in the car. Yikes. I was a little nervous. But thankfully my kids fell asleep and I could concentrate more. It was definately scary though cuz there were places where there had been rock slides and the rocks were still all over the roads and stuff. Also a couple times we had to squeeze tight around people that were traveling to the opposite side us. Scary!

My cousin Austin. He made our Grammy a very cool walking stick. What a guy!

What an adventure! We drove home from Nevada through Oregon and there were forest fires on our route, too. Scary! I'm glad you found a route home and that you escaped the bugs!
